I have a new build home in central Pennsylvania. All new appliances. Electric hot water (set at 120), gas heat, electric whole-house AC, various and sundry TVs and computers which are turned off when no one is around. I also have 2 aquariums (37g and 55g). Both have filters running 24/7, heaters and hood lights. We use CFBs where we can. We turn off lights. Cooling was set at 78. Electric bill is running between $150 and $200 per month. Seems high to me. We have neighbors who cooled to 68 and their bill was about the same as ours.

Q1. Would I be safe to turn the temp in the fridge up to say 40 or 42, curretnly set at 37?
Q2. Would I be safe to turn the freezer up to 10 or 15, currently at 0?
Q3. Any other suggestions for lowering the electric bill?

    Thanks

. The purpose of Fridge is to slow down bacteria growth by reducing the temperature of edibles surroundings. Also it need not be low enough for food to actually freeze. like milk, eggs, strawberries. Ideal temperature setting is between 34 and 40 degrees F. Increasing temperature too much is not suggested as it could spoil the food faster.

. Another tip is not to overload the shelves to let the air circulate properly and result in an even cooling.

. Avoid placing too much hot food in the fridge. consider cooling the food in an ice bath before placing in the fridge.

. Fresh meat, luncheon meat and cheese should be stored in the coldest part of the fridge.

. If your fridge is with exposed coils at the back, dust them down from time to time.

. Check for build-up of ice around the fridge/freezer. Defrost if necessary.

. Freezer temperature of 3 degrees is considered ideal.

. If your fridge is more empty than full most of the time, you may consider getting a smaller one for exchange.

. Remove fridge lights if surrounding area is always lighted.

    On a lighter note :

I too am always on the lookout for ways to save energy in my home (in the UK this time), and would like to share with forum readers a website I have come across, concerning a device for saving around 20% to 30% of boiler fuel (gas or oil) in medium to large houses which have an old (and non-'Combi') boiler without any sophisticated controls. The common advice for saving energy if you have an old boiler is to replace it with a modern high-efficiency Condensing boiler, BUT those advisors omit telling you that such a boiler may well cost between £2,500 and £4,000 (including installation) and can take up to 10 years to pay for itself in fuel savings! In contrast the device described in the website can pay for itself in just 1 year, provided your old boiler meets certain criteria. It worked for me, and saved me over 30% of my boiler fuel bills. If anyone is interested in reading about it, the website is: EnergySavingInfo.org.uk

Clean dust off coils at back of refrigerator at least twice a year.
If you're going away for a few days - turn off hot water system.
Always put a full load in washing machine.
Put ceiling fan on low in winter - forces warm air down.
